Special traffic arrangements on July 1

     The Transport Department today reminded people about the special transport and traffic arrangements for the celebration parade and public procession tomorrow (July 1).

     A Transport Department spokesman said that a celebration parade from Hong Kong Stadium to Southorn Playground in the morning and public procession from Victoria Park to Central in the afternoon would be held on Hong Kong Island tomorrow (July 1).  To facilitate the events, Police and the Transport Department would implement special traffic and transport arrangements between Causeway Bay and Central. As the parade and procession will take the same route along Yee Wo Street and Hennessy Road, prolonged road closures, traffic and public transport diversions in Causeway Bay and Wan Chai will be implemented.

     The department's Emergency Transport Co-ordination Centre will closely monitor the traffic situation and pubic transport services; arrange publicity of latest traffic news. The department and the Police will implement appropriate traffic measures whenever necessary.

     Main points of special traffic and transport arrangements are:

- Temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Causeway Bay, Wan Chai, Admiralty and Central areas will be implemented from 7.15am in phases. Yee Wo Street, Hennessy Road and Causeway Road will be closed.  Roads at Causeway Bay shopping area and in the vicinity of Victoria Park will also be closed in the afternoon for the procession. Queensway and other roads in the vicinity of Central Government Offices will be closed from 4pm;

- About 90 bus routes and 20 green minibus routes passing through the affected areas will be diverted;

- Tram service will be maintained;

- Bus stops, public light bus stands, taxi stands, parking meters and car parks in the affected areas will be suspended;

- Pedestrian zone on Lee Garden Road between Kai Chiu Road and Pak Sha Road will be temporarily rescinded from about noon to 7pm.

     The spokesman also appealed to people planning to go to the affected areas to use public transport.  Motorists are advised to follow the traffic signs and avoid driving into the affected areas if not strictly necessary.  They are also advised to exercise tolerance and patience, and observe the instructions of the Police on site during the time. In addition, commuters are advised to plan their route early and allow more travelling time to cater for unexpected delay.

     Notices will be displayed by public transport operators to advise passengers of the temporary arrangements. Passengers should take notice of passenger information at bus stops and people should watch out the latest traffic news via media.

     Details of the special temporary traffic and transport arrangements for the events are uploaded at the department's homepage. Details information on the temporary adjustments could also be available at the homepage of bus companies.
