The Transport Department today (September 20) signed a $3.1 million consultancy agreement with Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong Ltd for the Design and Construction Assignment for the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Project in Urban and New Territories Areas.

A spokesman for the Transport Department said the Consultants would be responsible for the detailed design and the administration of the contracts for implementation of the works.  "The assignment commenced from today," the spokesman said.  "Subject to availability of fund from the Government, construction works will commence in early 2008 for completion at the end of 2010."

The CCTV Project involves, for the purpose of traffic surveillance, the provision of about 140 new cameras in the Tseung Kwan O area, along Strategic Road Network and major roads or junctions, and renewal of about 100 existing obsolete cameras in Kowloon, Tsuen Wan and Sha Tin. It also includes installation of about 180 new cameras for traffic information dissemination to the public.

"Upon completion of the project, a better coverage of the CCTV system will be provided to the Transport Department for traffic surveillance. The CCTV system will enable the Transport Department to have better monitoring of traffic conditions and handle traffic incidents more promptly.  The CCTV system will provide real time traffic information to the public," the spokesman said.
