Traffic and Transport arrangements for ITU TELECOM WORLD 2006

The Transport Department announced today (December 1) that special traffic and transport arrangements would be implemented from December 4 and 6, when the ITU TELECOM WORLD 2006 (ITU) would take place at the AsiaWorld-Expo.

     The department anticipated that there would be an upsurge of demand for public transport services during that period.

     "We expect the traffic flow on Chek Lap Kok Island and in the vicinity of the MTR Airport Express Line's Hong Kong Station during the ITU event period will be heavier than usual. All ITU visitors are advised to take public transport as far as possible when travelling to and from the AsiaWorld-Expo," a spokesman for the department said, "Besides, drivers should pay attention to the most updated traffic information announced by radio/TV stations and the Tsing Ma Control Area's Variable Message Signs."

     The frequency of the MTR Airport Express Line and Tung Chung Line would be increased to carry more passengers to and from AsiaWorld-Expo. There will also be free shuttle-bus services between Tung Chung Station and AsiaWorld-Expo.

     A Joint Coordination Centre manned by the Commerce, Industry and Trade Bureau, the Police, Transport Department, Airport Authority, Mass Transit Railway Corporation Limited, together with representatives from ITU and AsiaWorld-Expo Management Ltd will deal with all emergency incidents, including the traffic and transport matters, relating to the ITU event.

     The Transport Department would strengthen the manning of the Emergency Transport Co-ordination Centre between December 4 and 8 to monitor the public transport services and the traffic situation on major roads. Emergency measures will be implemented and special announcement will be made to the public if needed.

     The spokesman reminded commuters that longer vehicle queues might appear around Pedder Street and Connaught Road Central during morning and evening peak hours. People going to the airport or Central District were advised to allow more time to get to their destination.

     Members of the public should also check on the latest traffic situation from the radio and TV, or by calling the department's dedicated hotline, 1834567, ITU enquiries hotline 1835508, and visiting the Transport Department website www.td.gov.hk.

     The following special traffic and transport arrangements will be implemented:

Transport arrangements:

     1.  The frequency of the MTR Airport Express Line will be enhanced during the period December 4 and 8. In addition, Tung Chung Line trains with more capacity will be deployed on the Airport Express Line to meet the demand.

     2.  To facilitate the ITU visitors to make use of the MTR Tung Chung Line services, a shuttle bus service plying between Tung Chung and AsiaWorld-Expo will be provided between December 4 and 8.

     3.  Between December 4 and 8, eight franchised bus routes (no. A21, E11, E21, E22, E22A, E22P, E32 and E41) will be truncated to omit AsiaWorld-Expo Bus Terminus after observing their last en-route stop at Cheong Hong Road / Airport Regal Hotel on their Airport bound journeys. The first en-route stop towards urban/NT bound will be at Ground Transportation Centre Bus Terminus.  Passengers on these bus routes can make use of the connecting shuttle bus service to travel between the Airport and AsiaWorld-Expo.

     4.  To facilitate Mainlanders going to AsiaWorld-Expo, the franchised bus route no. A43 (Airport bound service from Fanling) will be diverted via AsiaWorld-Expo from 7am to 7pm from December 2 to 8 daily.

Traffic arrangements:

      Drivers are advised to make use of the following routings:

     (a)  Private cars to make use of East Coast Road, Sky City Road East to reach the designated passenger drop-off zone at Sky City Car Park;

     (b)  Taxis to make use of East Coast Road, Sky City Road and Airport Expo Boulevard to reach the taxi stand; and

     (c)  Coaches to make use of Airport Road, Airport North Interchange and Sky City Road to reach the coach loading / unloading zone in AsiaWorld-Expo.
