Motorists and pedestrians urged to observe road safety during festive season

The Transport Department has reminded motorists and pedestrians to pay attention to road safety during Christmas and New Year holidays.

A department spokesman said road closures would be implemented in areas such as Central, Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui to facilitate celebratory activities and motorists were advised to drive with care and patience in these busy areas.

He also urged pedestrians to observe traffic lights and walk on the footpath. He added that they should be considerate and patient, and follow any advice or instructions given by the Police.

"The department's Emergency Transport Co-ordination Centre (ETCC) will closely monitor the traffic situation on all major roads, such as Gloucester Road, Des Voeux Road Central, Queensway, Hennessy Road, Yee Wo Street, Jordan Road and Nathan Road to ensure smooth traffic flow," the spokesman said.

Roads in the vicinity of the main shopping areas were likely to be busy a few days before the holidays.  He called on people to make use of public transport, avoid driving to busy areas and listen to the latest traffic news broadcast.
