Temporary traffic arrangements at Middle Road and Hankow Road (with map)

Temporary traffic arrangements would be implemented in the vicinity of Middle Road and Hankow Road in Tsim Sha Tsui from Thursday (September 6), the Transport Department announced today (September 4).  The new arrangements are being implemented to tie in with the Middle Road Subway Extension Project of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC).

A spokesman for the department said the works would be done by cut-and-cover method.  KCRC would occupy the road surface in the vicinity of Middle Road and Kowloon Park Drive for accommodation of the works site.  The road sections concerned will be temporarily closed for 30 months.

During the construction period, the section of Hankow Road between Middle Road and Salisbury Road will be changed from northbound to southbound.  Throughout the construction period two traffic lands will be maintained along Middle Road and at least two lanes for each of the direction of Kowloon Park Drive.

"The proposed reversal of traffic flow is intended to alleviate the potential impact during construction of the subway extension.  By reversing the traffic flow, vehicles traveling from the junction of Hankow Road and Middle Rad can reach Salisbury Road directly via Kowloon Park Drive.  The junction discharge capacity will be improved to remedy the traffic conditions of Middle Road and Hankow Road during the construction period," the spokesman said.

He emphasised that the Transport Department, together with the relevant government departments, would minimise the impact during the construction period, maintain road safety and a smooth traffic flow.  He called on motorists to pay attention to the re-routeing, be patient and take heed of road signs and instructions of police officers at site.
