Contract for renewal of Area Traffic Control System signed today

The Transport Department today (March 19) signed a $56.7 million contract with Thorn Security (Hong Kong) Limited for the renewal and provision of subsequent maintenance services of the Area Traffic Control (ATC) System on Hong Kong Island.

The contract includes replacement of the existing system by a modern one, provision of design, supply, implementation of a new computerised ATC System comprising a central computer system, 290 on-site traffic signal controllers, associated detectors and peripheral equipment.

It also includes the provision of maintenance services for the system for a period of five years after commissioning.

The existing ATC System on Hong Kong Island has been in operation since 1989 and is approaching the end of its serviceable life.

The renewed ATC System will better co-ordinate traffic signal timings to minimise vehicle stoppages and delays at road junctions, resulting in a reduction of journey time and thus improving the efficiency of the road network.

The contract works started in January 2004 and are scheduled for completion in early 2006.
