Free ferry rides scheme applications to close on January 2

**********************************************************

The "Free Ferry Rides to Three Outlying Islands" Scheme launched by the Government has received overwhelming response since its introduction. A spokesman for the Transport Department today (December 23) reminded interested organisations to grasp the last chance and submit their applications on or before January 2, 2009.

The scheme is a one-off $2 million subsidy scheme introduced by the Government on August 19. It aims to encourage schools, uniformed groups, non-governmental organisations as well as community and local groups to organise activities to Peng Chau, Lantau Island (Mui Wo) and Lamma Island (Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan). The last date for application is January 2.

"As at December 5, the Transport Department has approved more than 620 applications and more than 82,000 passenger trips are estimated to be made to the three outlying islands by ferry," the spokesman said.

For details of the scheme, interested organisations may browse the department's website (www.td.gov.hk) or call 1823 for enquiries.
