Special traffic arrangements for Lunar New Year holidays

The Transport Department will implement special arrangements to facilitate smooth traffic flow as holiday-makers travel to Lunar New Year celebrations throughout Hong Kong. These events include:

* Flower markets, particularly the largest one at Victoria Park on Lunar New Year's Eve (Wednesday);
* Chinese New Year Night Parade at Tsim Sha Tsui on Thursday;
* Lunar New Year Fireworks Display at Victoria Harbour on Friday;
* Che Kung Festival at Sha Tin on January 24; and
* Wish-making at the Lam Tsuen wishing tree, Tai Po throughout the holidays.

The department's Chief Transport Officer (Hong Kong), Mr Michael Ng Shi-hung today (January 20) briefed media and made appeals to road users concerning the special arrangements.

"As there will be partial or full road closures and traffic diversions on the affected roads, members of the public are advised to make the best use of public transport services to avoid congestion and unnecessary delay," Mr Ng said.

"Moreover, on-site police officers will implement the traffic and transport measures in phases according to the prevailing crowd and traffic situations at the vicinity. Drivers should avoid driving to the affected areas. Even so, they should drive with patience and follow police directions."

Mr Ng noted that during road closure periods, there would be no entry or exit from carparks and hotels for all vehicles in the affected areas.

"Before, during and after the fireworks display, ferry services will be suspended. Passengers are advised to check service details of the sailings with the ferry company.

"I also remind passengers heading for the airport and other cross-boundary checkpoints to allow more time if they have to pass through the affected areas in a bid to avoid delay."

Mr Ng added that cross-boundary passengers intending to use Yellow Bus services were advised to use KCR trains as far as possible. They should check with the Yellow Bus hotline, 2471 0792, for the queuing situation and be patient while waiting to board the buses.

Details of the special arrangements for the major Lunar New Year events have been uploaded onto the department's website, http://www.info.gov.hk/td/index.aspx?section=13&lang=1. The public can also call the Government 24-hour hotline 1823 for details. They should also listen to radio/TV announcements about the latest traffic situations.
