New Commissioner for Transport strives to enhance Hong Kong's transport system

     On assuming office today (August 17), Mr Joseph Y T Lai, the new Commissioner for Transport, said that he would continue to uphold the Transport Department's purpose statement to "Keep Hong Kong Moving" and to further enhance the transport system in Hong Kong to meet the community's demands.

     Mr Lai said, "The Transport Department has been endeavouring to provide the world's best transport system. Our transport services are safe, reliable, efficient, environmentally friendly and satisfying to passengers.

     "I shall work closely with my colleagues to strive to excel in our different roles in managing road traffic, regulating public transport services, licensing drivers and vehicles, promoting road safety, as well as planning for the future to cope with the growth in demand for transport facilities and services.

     "Last year marked the Transport Department's 40th anniversary. Looking to the future, the Government is committed to further expanding and improving Hong Kong's transport infrastructure. The Transport Department will continue to do its best in its key roles as a planner, manager and regulator of transport services to keep Hong Kong moving."
