TD reminds public to allow more travelling time on Monday

*********************************************************

In response to the industrial action to be taken by some franchised bus drivers on Monday (August 9), the Principal Transport Officer, Mr Albert Su, today (August 6) reminded the public to allow more travelling time on that day to cope with the traffic situation.

Mr Su said that the Transport Department (TD) had drawn up contingency plans with the franchised bus companies. Other public transport operators, including the Mass Transit Railway, had been asked to strengthen or adjust their services when necessary with a view to minimising the impact on bus services.

"The traffic situation in various districts may be affected during the industrial action. In drawing up the contingency plans, the TD will endeavour to maintain public transport services in areas where rail services are not available, like the Southern District and mid-levels on the Hong Kong Island," said Mr Su.

He advised members of the public to leave home early and allow more travelling time on Monday.  They should watch out for the latest traffic news broadcast by TV and radio stations and consider using other transport means if necessary.  Also, employers are appealed to be accommodating and understanding if their employees are late for work due to the traffic situations.

The TD's Emergency Transport Coordination Centre will be maintaining close liaison with the Police and public transport operators and will closely monitor the traffic and transport situation on August 9. Staff will be deployed at major roads and bus termini to monitor the situation. The TD will co-ordinate and implement contingency measures if necessary.

On the other hand, Mr Su hoped that both management and staff would continue their dialogue with a view to reaching a solution. He also urged the drivers to stay calm and carefully consider passengers' interests before taking any industrial action to minimise the inconvenience brought to passengers.
