Special traffic and transport arrangements for public procession this Sunday

******************************************************

The Transport Department (TD) today (August 27) reminded the public that special traffic and transport arrangements would be implemented this Sunday (August 29) to facilitate the holding of a public meeting and procession. The arrangements mainly include:

From about 12.30pm onwards, the roads in Tin Hau, Causeway Bay, Wan Chai and Admiralty including Causeway Road westbound, Irving Street, part of Pennington Street, Yee Wo Street westbound, Hennessy Road westbound, Queensway and the vicinity would be temporarily closed by phases to facilitate the public procession from Victoria Park to Chater Garden.

During the above road closure period, vehicles from King's Road heading for Causeway Bay and Wan Chai would be diverted via Tsing Fung Street Flyover, Victoria Park Road and Gloucester Road in lieu of Hing Fat Street, Causeway Road and Yee Wo Street.  Buses operating on these roads heading for Wan Chai, Central and Kowloon will be diverted via Gloucester Road; buses from the Southern District plying between Causeway Bay and Wan Chai via Aberdeen Tunnel will be diverted via Canal Road flyover and Gloucester Road.  Some of the bus routes on Hennessy Road eastbound heading for Victoria Park will be diverted via Marsh Road, Hung Hing Road and Victoria Park Road.

A total of 92 bus routes and 16 green minibus (GMB) routes operating in the affected areas will be temporarily diverted. The concerned public transport operators will arrange publicity to inform passengers of the temporary arrangements. Moreover, the bus stops, GMB stops, public light bus stands, taxi stands and taxi pick-up and drop-off points along the routeing and within the road closure areas will be suspended until the crowd has dispersed and the roads are reopened.

The metered parking spaces in Hing Fat Street car park and Tung Lo Wan Road will be temporarily suspended from about 11am onwards.  On the other hands, all public and private car parks within the road closure areas will be closed from about 12.30pm onwards until the crowd has dispersed and the roads are reopened.

Due to extensive road closures and traffic diversion in Causeway Bay on that day, the TD anticipates that the traffic on Causeway Road, Victoria Park Road, Gloucester Road, Canal Road flyover, Aberdeen Tunnel and Cross Harbour Tunnel will be very busy and congested. Motorists are advised to avoid driving to the affected or congested areas in the northern part of Hong Kong Island, especially Causeway Bay and Wan Chai. They are advised to plan their routes early, use alternative routes and allow more travelling time to cater for unexpected delays.  In case of traffic congestion, they should exercise tolerance and patience and follow the instructions of the Police.  Members of public planning to go to the affected areas are advised to make use of public transport.  Public transport commuters are advised to pay attention to the route diversions and suspension/relocation of stops.

Depending on the prevailing circumstances, other ad-hoc traffic and public transport measures, including further closures of roads, traffic diversions, alterations and suspension of public transport services, may be implemented by the TD and the Police at short notice. Motorists and the public are advised to pay attention to the latest traffic news on radio and television.

Details of the special traffic and transport arrangements are now available at the TD's website (www.td.gov.hk).  For further queries, please contact the 1823 Call Centre (Tel: 1823).
