Transport Department coordinates with public transport operators to meet passenger demand on "Car Free Day"

*******************************************************

The Transport Department (TD) said today (September 20) that all public transport operators had been informed to strengthen their services on the "Car Free Day" on September 22.

A TD spokesman said, "It is anticipated that the patronage of public transport services may increase on that day, the TD has informed all public transport operators including the Mass Transit Railway Corporation Limited, franchised bus companies and green minibus operators to enhance services to cater for passenger demand as necessary. The TD's Emergency Transport Coordination Centre (ETCC) will closely monitor the traffic and transport situation on that day.  The ETCC will also coordinate with the Police and public transport operators and release updated information to the public when necessary.

"The TD appeals to commuters, in particular those going to school and to work, to allow more travelling time to cater for unexpected delays.  In case of crowding in the stations, they should exercise patience and follow the instructions given by the staff. Members of the public are advised to be alert to the latest traffic and transport news broadcast on radio and television stations."

The TD endeavours to support environmental protection through the provision of the best public transport system in Hong Kong and encourages the public to use public transport services to alleviate  road traffic congestion, reduce vehicle emissions and help protect the environment.
