MTRC ready for Year 2000

Members of the Y2K Steering Committee of the Transport Department have been given the assurance by the Mass Transit Railway Corporation (MTRC) that all its operational systems are ready for the rollover to the year 2000.

At a visit to the Operations Control Centre of the MTRC today (Friday), the Committee learned that the Corporation had rectified all their critical systems and the entire operational system had undergone a very thorough and comprehensive test for two months with no problems found.

It was told that contingency plans including a system recovery plan had been worked out to cater for unexpected problems during the rollover.

Members of the Committee also noted that a Y2K Control Centre and a high level Crisis Management Committee would be established to coordinate and oversee the operation of the railway during the rollover and additional manpower would be reserved to monitor the provision of its services and the implementation of contingency plans.

The MTRC told members of the Committee that the special traffic and transport arrangements to meet the anticipated passenger demand generated by various millenium celebration activities were being developed.

The Steering Committee, led by the Commissioner for Transport, Mr Robert Footman, is monitoring the progress of Y2K compliance and contingency plans of the transport sector. A briefing by bus operators was held earlier on and members also plan to meet with tunnel and ferry operators shortly to help ensure a smooth transition of the transport sector in the rollover to the Year 2000.
