Contract for Tai Po and North District ATC System signed

Transport Department today (June 25) signed a $31.48 million contract with Teletech Peek Traffic Joint Venture for the provision of Area Traffic Control (ATC) System for Tai Po and North District.

Under the contract, the contractor shall be responsible for the supply, installation, implementation and the subsequent five-year maintenance of a centrally computerized Area Traffic Control System for Tai Po and North District. The contract will commence tomorrow (June 26, 2002) for a construction period of 24 months followed by one-year warranty and five-year maintenance. The consultant for the design and works supervision of this Contract is Hyder Maunsell Joint Venture.

Upon completion of the contract, signal controllers for all the existing and planned signalized junctions in Tai Po and North District (approximately 120) will be connected to a central computer, which enables control of the signals operation under the ATC system. By using the state-of-the-art technique, the proposed ATC system will centrally co-ordinate traffic signal timings to minimize vehicle stoppage and delay.

Transport Department anticipated that vehicle journey time would be reduced by an average of about 30 per cents as revealed from the result of the survey on the previously implemented ATC system in Sha Tin.

Where appropriate, the ATC system will operate the traffic signals of some junctions in a traffic responsive manner by automatically adjusting the signal plans and timings to meet the prevailing traffic conditions measured through detectors on the roads.

It is expected that the efficiency of the road network in Tai Po and North District will be substantially improved upon implementation of the ATC system.
