Franchised buses achieved Y2K compliance

Members of the Y2K Steering Committee of the Transport Department were given the assurance by franchised bus operators that their buses and parts were fully Y2K compliant.

At a briefing held at the Transport Department Headquarters today, Hong Kong's major franchised bus operators including Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB), New World First Bus (NWFB), Citybus and Long Win reported that they had obtained certifications or confirmation from their bus manufacturers and spare parts suppliers on Y2K compliance.

Rectification work to all the administration, financial, servicing and scheduling computer systems were also completed and confirmed to be Y2K compliant, the Steering Committee noted.

It also learned that the bus companies had commissioned independent bodies to advise on the testing and rectification work of their systems to ensure that they were ready for the millennium.

The bus companies also took the opportunity to explain the contingency plans to cater for unexpected problems during the rollover.

The Steering Committee, led by the Commissioner for Transport, Mr Robert Footman, is monitoring the progress of Y2K compliance and contingency plans of the transport sector. A series of visits to the rail companies and the tunnel operators, and a briefing by ferry operators will be conducted in the coming weeks to help ensure a smooth transition of the transport sector in the rollover to the Year 2000.
