KCR East Rail and Light Rail fully Y2K compliant

Members of the Y2K Steering Committee of the Transport Department have been given the assurance by the Kowloon-Canton Railway East Rail and Light Rail that all its critical systems are fully Y2K compliant.

At a visit to East Rail and Light Rail today (Wednesday), members were told that both contingency plans and system recovery and rectification plans of the company were already in place.

They also noted that all East Rail trains would stop at railway stations one minute before midnight on December 31, 1999 to ensure a smooth rollover.

Apart from the above measures, the company would reserve additional manpower to monitor the provision of its services and the implementation of contingency plans during the rollover.

The Committee member also noted that close liaison would be maintained with mainland authority in respect of cross boundary train services.

The Steering Committee, led by the Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Robert Footman, is monitoring the progress of Y2K compliance and contingency plans of the transport sector. Briefings by bus operators and the MTRC were held earlier on and members of the Committee will meet with tunnel and ferry operators shortly to help ensure a smooth transition of the transport sector in the rollover to the Year 2000.
