Licensing services unaffected by Y2K

The Transport Department announces today (Friday) that all computer systems and electronic equipment of the Licensing Division such as embedded systems, telephone enquiry systems, electronic display boards as well as office utilities have been rectified and certified to be Y2K compliant.

Assuring people of the undisrupted services to be provided by the Licensing Division before and after the millennium, a spokesman for the department reminded people to renew or apply for their driving licences and vehicle licences as soon as possible so as to avoid being in a rush with a large crowd before the new millennium arrives.

"Our advice is given, in particular, to those whose licences will expire between mid December and mid January because there tends to be a great many people coming for Licensing services before and after new year holidays," said the spokesman.

"Application for licence renewal may be sent by post and early application or process of documents will help avoid any unnecessary delay or inconvenience," added the spokesman.

Enquiries regarding licensing services may be delivered to the Licensing Office at Hong Kong (2804 2636), at Kowloon (2771 4354), at Sha Tin (2606 1468) or at Kwun Tung (2775 6835).

A Y2K Steering Committee has been set up by the Transport Department to monitor the progress of the Y2K compliance and contingency plans of the transport sector to ensure a smooth transition to the new millennium.
