Special Traffic and Transport Arrangements for the Lunar New Year Celebrations

Transport Department (TD) today (January 29, 2003) reminds the public that a series of special traffic and transport arrangements will be implemented to facilitate the Lunar New Year celebrations.

A. On January 30, 2003

To facilitate the holding of Lunar New Year Fair at Victoria Park, members of the public are reminded that partial road closure and traffic diversions will be implemented from 7 pm until the crowds have dispersed.

B. From January 30 to February 3, 2003

As additional control and safety measures on tunnel operations during the coming Lunar Chinese New Year holiday periods, actions will be taken by the operators of the 6 government tunnels (viz. Cross Harbour Tunnel, Aberdeen Tunnel, Lion Rock Tunnel, Airport Tunnel, Shing Mun Tunnels and Tseung Kwan O Tunnel) and by the operators of the 4 private tunnels (viz. Eastern Harbour Crossing, Western Harbour Crossing, Tate's Cairn Tunnel and Tai Lam Tunnel) as far as they can possibly arrange:

  * (a) not to close any tube for maintenance, and
  * (b) to step up radio broadcast of safety messages

C. From January 31 to February 1, 2003

Road closure, traffic re-routeing, prohibition to learner drivers, restricted zones, temporary suspension of parking spaces, temporary suspension and relocation of bus termini, temporary bus stops arrangements, temporary suspension of tram stops, temporary suspension of green minibus terminus/stands, temporary suspension of public light bus stands, temporary suspension of taxi stands, restrictions on access to/exit from car parks and hotels on closed roads, partial service extension of Central-Mid-Levels Escalator and special Mass Transit Railway (MTR), Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR), Light Rail (LRT), Hong Kong Tramways, franchised bus and green minibus services will be implemented and provided subject to demand.

The time may be brought forward or put back if necessary and the arrangements may also be implemented on 30 January 2003.

D. On February 1, 2003

Special traffic and transport arrangements will be implemented in connection with the 2003 Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Parade.

E. On February 2, 2003

Road closures by stages, traffic divisions, temporary suspension of parking spaces, temporary suspension of taxi stands and restrictions on access to/exit from car parks and hotels on closed roads will be implemented on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon from 6pm to facilitate the Lunar New Year Fireworks Display.

Special Mass Transit Railway (MTR), Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR), Light Rail (LRT), Hong Kong Tramways, Peak Tram, Central-Mid-Levels Escalator, franchised bus, green minibus and ferry services will be provided.

F. Cross-boundary

Passengers intending to use Lok Ma Chau - Huanggang cross boundary are strongly advised to phone the New Hong Kong Bus Company at 2471 0792 for the queuing situation before departing for the Lok Ma Chau terminus.

Transport Department will closely monitor both local and cross-boundary traffic during the holiday, and will take prompt action whenever necessary.
