No tinted glass on vehicles

The Transport Department (TD) reminded vehicles owners today (January 24) not to retrofit their vehicles with tinted glass. Their vehicles should be equipped with safety glass of such transparency that it would not obscure the view of the interior.

"The Road Traffic (Construction and Maintenance of Vehicles) Regulations specified that for windscreen, the light transmission rate of the glass should be over 75 per cent and for other passenger windows glass including rear windscreen, over 70 per cent," a TD spokesman said.

"Members of the public who spotted a vehicle with dark tinted glass could refer the case to TD's Vehicle Inspection Office, which would issue a Vehicle Examination Order to the vehicle owner and ask the owner to present the car to the Vehicle Examination Centre (VEC) at a specified date and time. VEC will issue a repair order to the vehicle owner or his/her representatives for rectification if the vehicle is found fitted with tinted glass."

The vehicle license will be voided if the vehicle owner fails to comply with the regulations.
