Bus stop reshuffle enhances traffic flow at Nathan Road

The Transport Department will re-organise bus stops along Nathan Road as part of the department's on-going efforts to enhance the efficiency of bus operation and to improve road traffic condition.

The re-organisation will be carried out in two stages. The rearrangement of 23 groups of bus stops at Nathan Road northbound will take effect on Sunday (February 27).

The next reshuffle of 24 groups of bus stops at Nathan Road southbound will be carried out on March 5 (Sunday).

Announcing details of the re-organisation scheme this (Friday) afternoon, the Senior Transport Officer of the department, Mr Michael Ng, said more than 90 bus routes would be involved in the scheme.

He said: "At present, there are some 3,100 bus stoppings per peak hour at each bound of this section of Nathan Road.

"To avoid congestion caused by loading/unloading activities at bus stops, we have, in consultation with the Police and bus companies, reviewed the existing distribution of bus stops at Nathan Road since late last year.

"The re-organisation scheme involves the combination of bus stops of routes with similar destinations taking into account site conditions of the bus stops and cancellation of short-distanced bus stops," he added.

After the scheme is fully implemented, bus stoppings at Nathan Road both bounds will be cut by about 15 per cent per peak hour.

Mr Ng said: "It is anticipated that bus journey time as well as traffic flow at Nathan Road will be improved."

He reminded passengers to pay attention to notices posted at various bus stops and leave home earlier during the initial period to avoid unnecessary delay.

"We will keep a close watch on the traffic condition and introduce improvements whenever necessary," he added.
