Traffic and transport arrangements for Hong Kong Marathon 2000

The Transport Department reminds motorists to pay attention to the following special traffic and transport arrangements to be implemented in Kowloon and the New Territories to facilitate the holding of the Hong Kong Marathon on February 20, 2000 (Sunday).

More than 30 roads will be fully or partially closed in several stages between midnight to around 3 pm and traffic diversions will be required on certain road sections, said the spokesman of the department when announcing the arrangements today (Friday).

The spokesman said that the road closure and traffic diversions would affect neither the traffic from Kowloon to Airport via West Kowloon Expressway northbound, Tsing Kwai Highway northbound, Cheung Tsing Tunnel northbound, Cheung Tsing Highway northbound and Tsing Ma Bridge nor the traffic to the New Territories via Ting Kau Bridge northbound.

The roads affected are those in West Kowloon, including Hung Hom Bypass, and southbound expressways from the airport. They are:

* West Kowloon Expressway southbound between Yau Ma Tei Interchange and Mei Foo;
* Hing Wah Street between Fortune Street and Lai Chi Kok Road;
* The slip road leading from Lin Cheung Road (Road P1) southbound to West Kowloon Expressway southbound;
* Salisbury Road between Chatham Road South and U-turn Slip road near the International Mail Centre;
* Hung Hom Bypass;
* Princess Margaret Road Link;
* Mody Lane;
* Gascoigne Road Flyover;
* Ngo Cheung Road; (Road D)
* Yan Cheung Road; (Road D10)
* Hoi Wang Road between Lai Cheung Road (Road D9) and Yan Cheung Road;
* The flyover leading from Hoi Wang Road to West Kowloon Expressway southbound;
* The slip road leading from West Kowloon Expressway northbound to Mei Foo;
* The slip road leading from Roundabout No. 7a to Lin Cheung Road northbound;
* The slip road at Lai Wan Interchange leading to Lin Cheung Road southbound, junction of Lai Po Road;
* The slip road leading from Hing Wah Street West Roundabout to Hing Wah Street West;
* Lai Po Road southbound between Sham Mong Road and Lai Wan Interchange;
* Sham Mong Road eastbound between Yuet Lun Street and Hing Wah Street;
* Sham Mong Road westbound between Tonkin Street West and Hing Wah Street;
* Tung Chau Street eastbound between Lai Chi Kok Road and Hing Wah Street;
* Lai Chi Kok Road eastbound between Tai Nan West Street and Hing Wah Street;
* Lai Chi Kok Road westbound between Hing Wah Street and Fat Tseung street; and
* The slip road from Government Supplies (Kowloon) Depot to Lai Chi Kok Road westbound.
* Tsing Kwai Highway southbound;
* Cheung Tsing Tunnel southbound;
* Cheung Tsing Highway southbound;
* Ting Kau Bridge southbound; (To be re-opened to franchised buses only around 12.30 pm)
* The slip road linking Tuen Mun Road to Ting Kau Bridge southbound;
* Exits from Tsing Ma Bridge to Cheung Tsing Highway southbound;
* Ramp A slip road from Tsing Yi South Bridge to Tsing Kwai Highway southbound;
* Ramp G and Ramp J from Kwai Chung Road to Tsing Kwai Highway southbound; and
* Road CP2 at Mei Foo Interchange.

During the closure of Ting Kau Bridge southbound, motorists heading for the Airport will be diverted to travel via Tuen Mun Road, Tsuen Wan Road, Tsuen Tsing Interchange, Tsing Tsuen Road, Tam Kon Shan Interchange, Fung Shue Wo Road, Tsing Yi Road West before reaching Tsing Ma Bridge while those heading for Kowloon have to make use of Tuen Mun Road, Tsuen Wan Road and Kwai Chung Road.

When the exits from Tsing Ma Bridge to Cheung Tsing Highway southbound are closed, all traffic from Lantau to Kowloon will be diverted to travel via Tsing Yi Road West, Fung Shue Wo Road, Tam Kon Shan Interchange, Tsing Tsuen Road, Tsuen Tsing Interchange, Tsuen Wan Road and Kwai Chung Road.

On the public transport arrangements, the spokesman announced that the following bus routes had to be diverted in several stages during midnight to 3 pm on February 20, 2000:

Bus Route A11, A12, E11, N11, A21, A22, N23, E23, E22, N29, 962, 969, N969, 930, 960, 961, 968, 61X, 62X, 269C, 269B, 904, 905, 2E, 10, 914, 5A, 203, 208, 269B, 264M, 32, 42, E33, E34, N30 and A43.

GMB Route 43M will also be diverted between 6.15 am and 10 am while GMB Route 44M will be suspended from 6.45 am to 1 pm, added the spokesman.

He said that both the Transport Department and the Police would monitor the traffic and transport situation closely and necessary adjustments would be made whenever necessary.
