New traffic signs for no-stopping zone and bus lane

The Transport Department reminds motorists that new traffic signs for "No Stopping" and "Bus Lane" have been effective from July 1.

Acting Senior Engineer (Standards) of the Transport Department, Mr Yau Kwok-ting, said at a briefing session today (July 10) that new designs of the no-stopping restriction sign and bus lane sign as stipulated in the Road Traffic (Traffic Control) (Amendment) Regulation 2001 was gazetted on April 27 and have come into operation on July 1.

He said: "the Government had conducted a comprehensive review of existing traffic signs and road markings since mid-1999 and developed a strategy to improve their design standards, installation and maintenance."

"A number of professional institutions and motorist associations had been consulted and were generally supportive!@to the proposed improvements of the traffic signs and road markings. The proposal was also welcomed by the Transport Advisory Committee at its meeting on September 19 last year," he added.

Major changes of the traffic signs for no-stopping restriction includes reduction of size of the plate and increase of size of the words to facilitate easier reading from longer distance. They will be erected facing oncoming vehicles. As for bus lanes, there will be clearer indication with enforcement time, which will be repeatedly painted on the bus lane at certain distance intervals (50 to 100 metres in urban area and 250 to 400 metres in main roads of rural area).

Work to convert or install the new signs has commenced earlier this month, and will be completed by the end of 2003.
