Drop boxes to renew licences urged

The Transport Department reminds members of the public who wish to renew their driving licences or vehicle licences to return their application forms by post or by making use of the drop boxes to avoid queuing up at the licencing offices.

"There were long queues outside our licensing offices in the past two days," a Transport Department spokesman said.

"Because of this, members of the public would have to wait a longer time than normal despite our efforts to strengthen the manning of the offices.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused but would wish to appeal to applicants to make use of the postal service or the drop boxes.

"Applicants are reminded to attach a cheque or cashier order of the appropriate fee to the application form and put them into the drop boxes."

The Transport Department yesterday (Monday) processed 12,000 applications (4,000 on an average day) and received some 1,500 applications through drop boxes (100 on an average day).

Though the department could not open more counters owing to the limitation of computer terminals, additional staff of the Department were deployed to render assistance to the applicants in the queue and answer questions to help speed up the process.

The spokesman added that only those driving or vehicle licences which will expire within four months will be eligible for renewal.
