Contract for renewal of CCTV System for Hong Kong Area traffic control awarded

The Transport Department today (September 28) signed a $16.8 million contract with the Univision Engineering Limited for the renewal and provision of subsequent maintenance services of the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) System on Hong Kong Island.

"The existing CCTV System on Hong Kong Island has been in operation since 1993 and is approaching the end of its serviceable life," a department spokesman said, "This contract will replace the existing system by a modern one."

The contract included design, supply and implementation of a new digital CCTV System comprising a central computer system, 41 on-site CCTV cameras and peripheral equipment. It also included the provision of maintenance services for the system for five years after commissioning.

The works of the contract began in September, 2004, for completion of the renewal works by mid-2006.

"The renewed CCTV System will provide traffic operators at the department control centre with real time traffic information from CCTV cameras installed at strategic locations, allowing quick action to be taken when necessary to cope with the abnormal traffic conditions and/or traffic incidents," the spokesman said.
