New Traffic Arrangement at Hankow Road and Lock Road

New traffic measures will be implemented on Hankow Road and Lock Road, Tsim sha Tsui on June 9 and June 12 respectively to improve the traffic flow in the vicinity.

With effect from 10 am on June 9, 2000, 10 metered parking spaces on Hankow Road for private cars will be cancelled, two parking spaces for the disabled re-located to the opposite kerbside lane, and 26 motorcycle parking spaces re-located northwards near Haiphong Road.

Private cars may park their vehicles in carparks nearby which have more than 2,500 parking spaces in total, said a Transport Department spokesman when announcing the details of the traffic improvement measures.

The existing carriageway of the two-lane Hankow Road will be reduced to one lane. The other lane along the western kerbside will be designated loading/unloading bays.

"The traffic on Hankow Road is not heavy and one traffic lane should be able to meet the demand," said the spokesman.

"With the provision of the loading area, loading/unloading activities of goods vehicles will be better regulated."

As for Lock Road of which the traffic is not heavy either, its carriageway will also be reduced from two lanes to one lane only with its eastern kerbside lane to be designated as loading/unloading area with effect from 10 am on June 12, 2000.

The loading/unloading bays will be painted with yellow hatched markings and new traffic signs will be erected to advise drivers that loading/unloading activities shall be carried out inside the area and waiting at yellow hatched marking area will be prosecuted.

To make sure that no obstruction will be caused to through traffic, no-stopping restriction will be imposed outside loading/unloading bay area.

"We will monitor the traffic situation closely after the measures are implemented, and we will continue to review our traffic management to introduce more improvement measures as appropriate," said the spokesman.
