Possible transport service disruption tomorrow

The Transport Department today (November 18) reminded commuters planning to make their journeys to and from the Lantau Island to be prepared for a possible service disruption on land transport on Lantau owing to a slow drive protest reportedly to be staged around noon time tomorrow (November 19).

The protest is reportedly to be staged by a residents group on the rejection on the Tai Ho Wan to Mui Wo Link alignments proposal.

A spokesman for the Department said about 100 vehicles might take part in a slow drive from south Lantau to Tung Chung via Tung Chung Road. Traffic along Tung Chung Road might be affected and bus services might be delayed or disrupted.

The spokesman advised commuters to pay special attention to the development through listening to the radio broadcast.

The Transport Department will closely monitor the situation by sending staff on site to observe, and set up a control centre to liaise with the public transport operators in case service is disrupted and supplementary services have to be implemented.

The spokesman urged commuters, in particular those boarding a plane at the Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok, to reserve more time for the journey, and use the Airport Railway if necessary.

Commuters going to the Lantau Island are also reminded of the possible disruption of bus services. They are advised to use the ferries as appropriate.

The Transport Department will update the public with latest information through radio announcements. Public transport operators concerned have also been notified and they have been requested to display notices or make announcements as appropriate so that the messages can reach their passengers.

The Transport Department has sent a letter to the residents group today to invite them to attend a meeting in the coming few days.

"We hope in expressing their opinions, the residents group will be considerate and will not cause inconvenience to the public," the spokesman added.
