Continuous implementation of pedestrianisation in Stanley

The four-week trial implementation of a pedestrianisation scheme in Stanley has completed successfully with the Transport Department's decision to have the scheme continued on Stanley Main Street and Stanley Market Road between 11 am and 6 pm on Sundays and public holidays starting this Sunday (July 16).

"The trial was well received by local residents, district councillors and the tourism industry, and many people find it safer and more comfortable to walk along both streets," said a department spokesman.

"That is exactly what we hope to see with such a scheme introduced to Stanley which has become a tourist attraction upon the completion of the Stanley Plaza.

"Our survey shows that the pedestrian volume at Stanley Main Street and Stanley Market Road are around 2,870 pedestrians per hour and 1,640 pedestrians per hour respectively," the spokesman said.

Feedbacks and comments on the trial prove a genuine need for such a scheme there.

"In response to the received feedback, we have made some improvements to the traffic signs there and decided to set up a temporary car park near the pedestrian zone to cater for the parking need."

"We are also considering carrying out amenity works on both Stanley Main Street and Stanley Market Road to create a more pleasant environment," the spokesman added.

Both Stanley Main Street and Stanley Market Road will continue to be designated as pedestrian priority zone (i.e. vehicles must give way to pedestrians) at all times.

The Transport Department will closely monitor the implementation of the scheme and make appropriate adjustments whenever necessary.
