Pedestrianisation on Sai Yeung Choi Street South extended to weekdays

"Sai Yeung Choi Street South between Nelson Street and Soy Street will be designated as a pedestrian zone from 4 pm to 12 mid-night from Monday to Saturday and public holidays starting October 2 and vehicles will not be allowed to enter the street section at this specific time period.

A Transport Department spokesman said that the department had decided to implement the above arrangement for three months to see how people in the bustling area of Mong Kok would take the pedestrianisation scheme when it became part of their daily life.

"When we gave the pedestrianisation of the street section a trial run on September 13, we observed that the arrangement well separated traffic from the pedestrian flow," said the spokesman.

"Since the pedestrian scheme implemented in this area is only of a part-time nature, retail shops along the street still have time for goods delivery. The trial has proved that pedestrianisation of the section is welcomed by users and supported by the Yau Tsim Mong District Council."

A review on the scheme will be conducted three months later so as to allow the department to gather enough information to decide whether the scheme should continue on the street section.

The spokesman also reminded motorists that the pedestrianisation scheme and road closure measures on streets around Sai Yeung Choi Street South on Sundays remained unchanged and they should not enter the following street sections between 12 noon to 12 midnight during which only pedestrians were allowed:

* Sai Yeung Choi Street South between Argyle Street and Dundas Street;
* Nelson Street between Fa Yuen Street and Sai Yeung Choi Street South ; and
* Soy Street between Fa Yuen Street and Sai Yeung Choi Street South.

"The Transport Department will monitor closely traffic situation of the streets

concerned both on Sundays and weekdays and appropriate adjustments will be made when necessary," said the spokesman.
