Wing Tai Road flyover opens on Sunday

Motorists can enjoy through traffic from Chai Wan Road westbound to Wing Tai Road northbound upon the opening of the new flyover, Wing Tai Road flyover, from 10 am on Sunday (August 27).

The 170-metre long two lane one-way flyover is part of the Chai Wan Road/Wing Tai Road improvement scheme, the construction of which started in May 1998. Improvement to the junction of Chai Wan Road and Sun Yip Street was completed in April this year.

A spokesman for the Transport Department said the scheme was designed to cater for future traffic growth to be generated by developments in Siu Sai Wan.

He said: "At present, motorists have to pass through signalised junctions at-grade when travelling between Siu Sai Wan and Island Eastern Corridor.

"The flyover will allow motorists to enjoy smoother traffic without passing the signalised junctions, thus significantly increase the capacity of the junctions.

"Motorists who use the flyover instead of the road at-grade to travel between Chai Wan Road westbound and Wing Tai Road northbound will have their journey time reduced."

In addition to the construction of the flyover, the improvement project also comprises:

* the widening of a section of eastbound Wing Tai Road between Sheung On Street and Chai Wan Road from a two-lane carriageway to a three-lane one;
* modification of the junctions of Chai Wan Road/Wing Tai Road and Chai Wan Road/Sun Yip Street;
* the construction of associated traffic islands, footway, landscaped open space and traffic aids.

The improvement project will cost about $69 million.

The spokesman reminded motorists that the speed limit of the flyover would be 50 km per hour.

A number of public transport services will also be diverted upon the opening of the flyover, added the spokesman.

New World First Bus (NWFB) route 84; Citybus (CTB) routes 85, 118P, 788 and 789; as well as green minibus route 62 will be diverted to travel via Wing Tai Road flyover when heading for Island Eastern Corrdior or Heng Fa Chuen.

Green minibus route 47M on journeys to Siu Sai Wan will be re-routed to operate via Chai Wan Road in lieu of San Ha Street and Wing Ping Street.

To tie in with the diversion, the bus stops for NWFB route 84 and CTB routes 85, 118P and 788 on Wing Tai Road outside Yue Wan Estate will be cancelled.

Motorists and passengers are urged to take note of the new arrangement.
