Joint efforts to promote PLB safety

The Commissioner for Transport, Mr Robert Footman, said that the cooperation among public light bus (PLB) drivers, the trade and the government departments was essential in providing a safe and reliable PLB service to Hong Kong citizens.

Officiating today (August 2) at the first of a series of workshops on PLB driving safety for about 120 PLB drivers, Mr Footman said the workshops would help the participants obtain deeper understanding of safe driving and enhance road safety as a result.

Being one of the various measures the Transport Department has adopted to promote PLB safety, the workshops provide a forum for parties concerned to exchange views on road safety, driving skills, drivers' responsibility and law enforcement.

The Transport Department has set up a task group on the PLB safety and implemented management schemes to better regulate Green Minibus (GMB) service.

Other measures being implemented include the display of driver identity on GMBs and enhanced publicity of the Transport Complaint Unit's hotline and GMB operators' hotline.

Currently there are about 4,350 PLBs in Hong Kong and they carry more than 1.5 million passengers a day.
