Improvements to San Tin Interchange to relieve traffic

The Director of Highways, Mr Mak Chai-kwong, today (April 18) signed a $348 million contract on behalf of the Government with Chun Wo Construction and Engineering Company Limited to commence the improvement works to San Tin Interchange at Lok Ma Chau.

In view of the heavy traffic including cross-boundary goods vehicles, the existing San Tin Interchange and the roads in the vicinity are overloaded and the cross-boundary traffic queue often tails back from the vehicle holding area to the San Tin roundabout, and consequently affects the smooth operation of San Tin Highway and Fanling Highway.

To cope with the cross-boundary traffic demand and to relieve traffic congestion in the area, a pair of elevated roads will be constructed from San Tin Highway and Fanling Highway approaches of the roundabout as bypasses to the vehicle holding area. These elevated roads, when completed, will only be used by northbound cross-boundary goods vehicles so as to segregate these vehicles from other vehicles using the existing San Tin roundabout.

Works starts in April, 2005 for completion in early 2007.

Ends/Monday, April 18, 2005
