Traffic arrangement for reconstruction of Causeway Bay flyover

Traffic arrangements will be implemented from 6am on Saturday (June 11) by the Government to facilitate reconstruction of the Causeway Bay Flyover.

The new arrangements are expected to continue for about two years.

The Deputy Project Manager of Highways Department's Major Works Project Management Office, Mr Wan Man-leung said today (June 8) in a press conference that in order to acquire sufficient space for the reconstruction, the department had constructed a temporary carriageway in part of the Causeway Bay Promenade to replace the adjacent section of Victoria Park Road eastbound carriageway, so that the existing 3-lane configuration along the affected section would remain unchanged.

Details of the temporary traffic arrangements are as follows:

* The three rightmost traffic lanes of Victoria Park Road eastbound between the access road for Causeway Bay Promenade and the up-ramp of Island Eastern Corridor (IEC) will be closed. The affected traffic lanes will be temporarily re-provided at Causeway Bay Promenade and the traffic will be diverted to the temporary carriageway.

* Traffic from Cross Harbour Tunnel heading for North Point will be diverted to the first exit road on the left.

* Traffic from Cross Harbour Tunnel heading for Causeway Bay will be diverted to the second exit road on the left.

* Access to Causeway Bay Flyover up-ramp will be shifted from the innermost lane of Victoria Park Road eastbound to the outermost lane.

* Traffic from Hung Hing Road Flyover will be directed to North Point and IEC only. Motorists in Wan Chai North heading for Causeway Bay and/or Tai Hang may consider using Fleming Road and Gloucester Road for access to Causeway Bay Flyover.

* The speed limit along the affected road sections on Victoria Park Road eastbound and in the vicinity will be reduced from 70km to 50km per hour.

Cross harbour bus route Nos 914X and 948P on journeys to Causeway Bay will be diverted. The bus stops for the above routes on Harbour Road and at Convention Avenue will be relocated to Wan Chai Ferry Pier Bus Terminus. Cross harbour bus route No 307 heading for Tai Po will also be diverted. The bus stops for the route on Harbour Road and outside Wan Chai Swimming Pool will be relocated to Gloucester Road outside Immigration Tower.

"To enhance public awareness of the new traffic and transport arrangements,  a series of publicity measures will be implemented," Mr Wan said.

These include announcements through the press and radio; uploading the traffic arrangements on Transport Department's website; radio broadcast inside the Cross Harbour Tunnel; distribution of information leaflets and erection of countdown signs to the implementation date and banner. For enquiries, please dial 1823 or 2804 2600.

"To implement the traffic arrangements, we need to carry out some road works in the early hours of June 11 and 12. Motorists heading for Causeway Bay and North Point during that period are advised to follow the traffic signs along the road and the announcement inside the Cross Harbour Tunnel," Mr Wan said.

Major Works Project Management Office of Highways Department signed a $73 million contract in June, 2004, to begin the reconstruction of Causeway Bay Flyover and associated widening of Victoria Park Road for completion in mid 2007.

The works are to improve road capacity to relieve traffic congestion at the Causeway Bay Flyover and the Island Eastern Corridor westbound outside Victoria Park.

The contract includes the demolition of the existing Causeway Bay Flyover and the adjoining footbridge; the construction of a 210m long two-lane one way flyover connecting Victoria Park Road eastbound to Gloucester Road southbound; the construction of a covered footbridge spanning across Victoria Park Road; widening and realignment of a 170-metre westbound section of Victoria Park Road to five traffic lanes; the realignment of a 225-metre eastbound section of Victoria Park Road; and the associated works including landscaping works.
