Traffic Arrangements for Reconstruction of Causeway Bay Flyover

In response to media enquiries about an allegation reportedly made by a co-opted member of the Wan Chai District Council, Planning, Traffic and Environmental Protection Committee that the Highways Department (HyD) had hidden certain facts when consulting the Committee on the temporary traffic arrangements associated with the reconstruction of the Causeway Bay Flyover, a spokesman for the Department confirmed that the allegation was totally unfounded.

“ We consulted the relevant committees of both the Wan Chai and Eastern District Councils in January this year on the temporary traffic management schemes to be implemented in connection with the reconstruction of Causeway Bay Flyover.  The papers submitted to the committees stated clearly that “ upon the opening of the temporary carriageway, for safety reason, traffic from Wan Chai North to Causeway Bay or Tai Hang will need to use Fleming Road, Marsh Road or Gloucester Road as Hung Hing Road Flyover will only carry traffic to North Point and Eastern District,” the spokesman said.  Both the committees supported the temporary traffic management schemes.  Copies of the papers and minutes of the meetings are available at HyD's website at http://www.hyd.gov.hk.

HyD held a press conference on June 8, 2005 on the temporary traffic arrangements for reconstruction of Causeway Bay Flyover.  There was an allegation as reported in two newspapers today that the Department was hiding the fact that more vehicles would be attracted to Gloucester Road eastbound in connection with the temporary traffic diversion scheme when consulting the Wan Chai District Council in January 2005.  The temporary traffic diversion scheme will be implemented as from this Saturday (June 11).
