Traffic of Tate's Cairn Tunnel smooth

The Transport Department (TD) today (August 1) activated the Emergency Traffic Co-ordination Centre (ETCC) on the first day of the Tate's Cairn Tunnel toll rise.

"The traffic flows of both the Tate's Cairn Tunnel and Lion Rock Tunnel today are relatively smooth and there is no significant change of traffic volume of the two tunnels" a TD spokesman said.

From 12.01am to 8 pm, the number of vehicles using the Tate's Cairn Tunnel was 46,000, a fall of about 6%, or about 2,700 vehicles less than the previous Monday. The number of vehicles using the Lion Rock Tunnel was 71,500, about 2% more than the previous Monday, or an increase of about 1,500 vehicles.

"Today is the first day which the Tate's Cairn Tunnel raises its tolls.  We still need to monitor the habits of motorists.  TD's ETCC will continue to keep a close eye on the traffic of both tunnels," the TD's spokesman added.
