Road Safety Vision and Symbol Competitions prize presentation

A prize presentation ceremony for the Road Safety Vision and Symbol competitions organised by the Road Safety Council (RSC) was held today (July 8) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The selected road vision is: "Zero Accidents on the Road, Hong Kong's Goal" and, together with the winning entry of the symbol competition, becomes a brand name for road safety in Hong Kong.

Officiating at the ceremony, Chairman of the RSC and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Mr Tang King Shing, said that an open competition was organised in November last year to invite public participation to identify a commonly shared Road Safety Vision. Of the 3,146 entries, 25 were selected for public voting on the Internet, and "Zero Accidents on the Road, Hong Kong's Goal" was the one selected as the Road Safety Vision.

Also present to officiate at the ceremony were the Commissioner for Transport, Mr Robert Footman, Chairman of Road Safety Campaign Committee Mr Yu Kam-kee, Chairperson of the Working Group for the Road Safety Vision and Symbol Ms Junia Ho, and Chairman of ExxonMobil Hong Kong Limited, Mr P C Tan.

Famous artistes, Hacken Lee and Kelly Chen, were appointed as Road Safety Vision Ambassadors in March this year to help promote the vision and the symbol. Mr Lee attended the ceremony and reminded participants of tips for road safety.

"A road safety symbol is essential to ingrain the message of road safety," Mr Tang said. "A 'Road Safety Symbol Design Competition' was organised in March, 2004, to truly reflect the vision and serve as a road safety brand name."

The adjudicating panel selected 12 entries from the 2,888 entries for further consideration.

Reflecting the attributes of the Road Safety Vision, the symbol characterised by the design of an egg, indicating "zero accident" and surrounded by a road in "S" shape to represent road safety was judged the winner.

Mr Tan, chairman of ExxonMobil Hong Kong Limited, the key supporter of the competitions, said the company was pleased to be a partner with RSC over many years and the vision "Zero Accidents on the Road, Hong Kong's Goal" echoed ExxonMobil's motto of "Nobody Get Hurt". "We can all strive to achieve this together," he said.

During the ceremony, officiating guests co-operated to complete the puzzle of the Road Safety Symbol. Participants also sang the Road Safety Vision theme song, composed by Hans Chong, an amateur composer of the band "Fuzzo", and Joel Wong, lyric composer, to make the vision more widely disseminated in the community.
