Transport Dept awards contract for Area Traffic Control System

The Transport Department today (March 6) signed a contract with Siemens Limited and Siemens PLC Joint Venture to construct an Area Traffic Control (ATC) System for Tuen Mun and Yuen Long Districts.

The department spokesman said the ATC systems for the two districts would co-ordinate traffic signal timings to minimise vehicle stoppage and delay at road junctions, help in reduction of journey time and improve the efficiency of the road networks. The total contract value is $70 million, which comprises construction costs of $52 million and five-year maintenance costs of $18 million.

"The rapid housing and new town developments in Tuen Mun and Yuen Long in recent years resulted in a significant increase in traffic flow in both the regional and local road networks. At present, the signal system is isolated and each signalised junction works on its own. The signal timing can only be adjusted on site. The department therefore plans to implement an ATC system for more efficient traffic management and monitoring of the road networks," he added.

The contract includes design, supply and implementation of the computerised ATC system comprising a central computer system covering about 249 on-site traffic signal controllers, associated detectors and peripheral equipment, as well as maintenance services for five years. Works for the implementation of the system are scheduled to commence today for completion in October 2008.

The Transport Department has appointed Delcan Arup Joint Venture(DAJV)to supervise the construction works.
