The "Star" Ferry Company was incorporated in 1898 and continued services which had begun in 1890. The Company is now a subsidiary of The Wharf (Holdings) Limited.

The "Star" Ferry Company Limited (SF) is the only franchised ferry operator in the territory. Its current franchise for the Edinburgh Place - Kowloon Point and Wan Chai - Kowloon Point started in April 1998 and will be expired in March 2008. In 1998, SF successfully won the tender for licences to operate two inner harbour ferry services : Wan Chai - Hung Hom and Edinburgh Place - Hung Hom. These licensed services commenced operation on 1 April 1999 and the licences are valid for three years up to 31 March 2002.
