The Probationary Driving Licence Scheme for motor cycles and motor tricycles was launched on 1 October 2000.  From 9 February 2009, this scheme is extended to private cars and light goods vehicles.  With effect from that date, any person who applies to take a driving test for motor cycle, motor tricycle, private car or light goods vehicle is only eligible to apply for a probationary driving licence upon passing the test.  The holder of a probationary driving licence to drive a vehicle class is required by law to undergo a 12-month probationary driving period before a full driving licence can be issued.
