Trial of New Sensors in Parking Meters
Member of the public are advised that to further enhance the services of parking meters, the Transport Department will commence a six-month on-site trial of new sensors in parking meters at the four designated locations listed below across the territory with effect from 2 July 2026:
- Kut Shing Street, Chai Wan, Hong Kong Island
- Cheung Ning Street, To Kwa Wan, Kowloon
- San Ma Tau Street, To Kwa Wan, Kowloon
- Lo Tak Court, Tsuen Wan, New Territories
The sensors will be installed directly below the existing parking meters and will not affect the normal use of meters or payment by motorists. The sensors will record the occupancy status or occupied objects round-the-clock and the backend system will then utilize artificial intelligence technology to analyze the categories of the objects based on the collected data. The trial aims to evaluate the performance and technical feasibility of the new sensors under actual field conditions. This will enhance the precision of real-time occupancy status of metered parking spaces, enabling motorists to obtain more accurate parking space information and allowing relevant government departments to gain a more comprehensive overview of the occupied metered parking spaces and take appropriate follow-up actions.
The sensors collect only occupancy status or occupied objects of the parking space and will not record any vehicle registration numbers or human faces. They will strictly comply with the requirements of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance to ensure that collection, processing and use of data adhere to the relevant statutory provisions. The sensors will be calibrated to cover only the respective parking spaces. Furthermore, the collected data will be encrypted to ensure that such data will not be accessed, processed or used without authorisation.
During the trial period, notices will be displayed at the trial locations to inform motorists and the public that the sensors are in operation.
