Railways are safe, efficient, reliable, comfortable and environmentally friendly mass carriers. They are the backbone of Hong Kong's public transport system which account for about 42% of all trips made on public transport each day. Hong Kong's railways are run by the MTR Corporation Limited (MTRCL). The total route length of MTR network in Hong Kong is about 271 kilometers, including 9 local lines, Airport Express (AEL), The Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link (Hong Kong Section) (XRL) and Light Rail.

MTR is a heavily patronized railway network consisting of 9 local lines, including Kwun Tong Line, Tsuen Wan Line, Island Line, South Island Line, Tung Chung Line, Tseung Kwan O Line, Disneyland Resort Line, East Rail Line and Tuen Ma Line. New East Rail Line platforms of Hung Hom Station, Exhibition Centre Station and Admiralty Station Extension were put into operation upon the commissioning of East Rail Line cross-harbour extension on 15 May 2022.

MTRCL also operates a 35.2 km AEL, which provides services to the Hong Kong International Airport and also in-town check-in facilities in some stations.

The Hong Kong Section of XRL has a route length of 26 kilometres and connects with the national high speed rail network. The XRL trains provide direct service between Hong Kong West Kowloon Station and 66 mainland destinations.

The MTR, XRL and Airport Express networks comprise a total of 99 stations and carry an average of about 3.7 million passengers per day in 2022.

Light Rail is a local transportation network to meet the transport needs of the residents in the Northwest New Territories. It now has a route length of about 36.2 kilometres with 68 stops. It carries about 360,900 passenger trips every day in 2022. In addition, the MTRCL provides feeder bus services to and from many Light Rail stops in the Northwest New Territories to facilitate passenger interchange between the Light Rail and Tuen Ma Line.
