Franchised Bus Services

Five franchised bus companies are providing bus services to the travelling public. They have 5,977 buses and operate about 580 routes by end December 2004. The bus operators are:
  • Citybus Limited;
  • Kowloon Motor Bus Company (1933) Limited;
  • Long Win Bus Company Limited;
  • New Lantao Bus Company (1973) Limited; and
  • New World First Bus Services Limited.


Currently, 2,457 or 41% buses are wheelchair accessible. They are equipped with fixed ramps and wheelchair parking spaces inside the compartment for carriage of wheelchair bound passengers. Next bus stop announcement and display system are provided on board of 3,804 buses to announce and display the next bus stop for the benefit of passengers with visual and hearing impairment respectively. The entire double-deck bus fleet of Long Win Bus Company Limited is equipped with bus stop announcement system. The Kowloon Motor Bus Co. (1933) Ltd. has launched a trial scheme for provision of 3 cyber bus stops at Urban Kowloon. The Cyber bus stops can announce route information in Cantonese, Putonghua and English to people with visual impairment. The franchised bus companies have installed some and all of the following features on board their buses to cater for the transport needs of passengers with disabilities:

  • fixed ramp;
  • wheelchair space with back rest and restraint lap belt;
  • front kneeling capability with wide entrance;
  • high coloured contrast and textured handrail system inside compartment;
  • super low floor covered with non-slippery floor material;
  • easily reached bell;
  • priority seats for passengers with disabilities;
  • next bus stop public announcement and LED display;
  • large electronic destination and route number display on the front;
  • large electronic route number display on the side and rear;
  • closing door buzzer and warning lamp at exit; and
  • Braille registration number plate and customer service hotline inside compartment.
