Public Light Buses

| Green minibus equipped with call bell |
There are two types of public light buses : red and green minibuses. The green minibuses operate on fixed routings, frequencies and fares authorized by the Transport Department. The Red Minibuses operate flexibly in response to the market. Their routeings, frequencies and fares are not subject to regulation but there are restrictions on their operation.
All 4,350 public light buses are air-conditioned and have 16 passenger seats. Destination and fare indicators are displayed at the front of the vehicles. Since 1997, operators of new green minibus routes have been required to install call bells inside compartment so that passengers can indicate to the drivers that they wish to alight at the next stop.
Moreover, the operators are encouraged to provide the following features on board to facilitate passengers with disabilities:
- priority seats for persons in need;
- braille registration number plate inside compartment;
- provision of handrails; and
- non-slippery floor.
However, due to the existence of steps on public light buses, wheelchair users and persons with severe walking difficulties may find this mode unsuitable for commuting. Those persons with visual and hearing impairment as well as those with moderate walking difficulties may conveniently use the services.
