MTR System Map
The MTR is a metropolitan railway comprising 50 stations and 6 lines, namely the Tsuen Wan, Kwun Tong, Island, Tung Chung, Tseung Kwan O Lines and the Airport Express Line (see Figure 1). The stations and train facilities together with the MTR staff provide a convenient customer service to passengers with disabilities. The following facilities are provided for passengers with disabilities:
Passengers with walking difficulty
Ramps, lifts (including stair lifts and passenger lifts), wheelchair aids, and bi-directional wide gates are available at stations for passengers with mobility difficulty. Details of accessibility to each station are given in Table 1 (see page13). Wheelchair parking spaces are provided inside all trains. A wheelchair pictogram is fixed on platform screen doors or on the platform floor where there is no platform screen door and on the train body to identify the set of train doors which lead wheelchair user directly to the wheelchair parking spaces inside trains.

Tactile guide paths are provided at all stations to lead visually impaired passengers to Customer Service Centres, entry/exit gates, stairs/lifts and train platforms. Audible devices are installed at escalators to help visually impaired passengers locate escalators to leave platforms. Tactile yellow lines are laid along the platform edge on the Tsuen Wan, Kwun Tong and Island Lines, where there are no platform screen doors. Public announcements identifying the next station are made inside train compartments and the destination of approaching trains is announced at platforms. A buzzer sound is emitted before train doors are closed. Colour contrast grab poles and rails are provided inside train compartments of Tsuen Wan, Kwun Tong, Island, Tung Chung and Tseung Kwan O Lines.
Braille plates are attached to all Octopus Add Value Machines and at all stations lifts. Tactile Station Layout Map with voice synthesis device is installed in Shep Kip Mei, Kowloon Tong, Kowloon Bay, Kwun Tong, Mei Foo and Wan Chai stations. An audible device is being installed in the exit gates led by the tactile guide path to inform visually impaired passengers the fare deducted and remaining value on dedicated Octopus cards. In addition, colour contrast inter-car barriers have been fitted to the trains to prevent people with visual impairment from falling into the rail accidentally.
Passengers with hearing impairment
Induction loops to assist hearing aid users and information cards are provided at Customer Service Centres of the Tsuen Wan, Kwun Tong, Island and Tseung Kwan O Lines. Passenger information display systems using light emitting diode (LED) boards are provided at all stations. Info Panels, which display train service messages in addition to general information, are provided in every train on the Tsuen Wan, Kwun Tong, Island and Tseung Kwan O Lines. Flashing System Maps are installed on board all trains on the Tsuen Wan, Kwun Tong, Island,Tung Chung and Tseung Kwan O Lines, and Active Line Diagrams are provided on board Airport Express trains to give visual information on the location and direction of the train.
