Pedestrian Schemes for Wan Chai
There are substantial commercial, retail and other economic activities in Wan Chai. Insufficient road space to accommodate both vehicular traffic and pedestrians also contributes to traffic accidents. In order to improve the environment and safety for pedestrians, Transport Department is examining the feasibility of implementing pedestrian schemes in the crowded parts of Wan Chai. These include:
Stage 1 (2002-2006)
(1) Part-time Pedestrian Street
The part time pedestrian street for Tai Yuen Street (section between Johnston Road and Cross Street) has been operating from 10:00a.m. to 6:00p.m. daily since mid 2002.
(2) Traffic Calming Street
The southern footpath of the following road sections at Johnston Road have been widened to the edge of the tram lane.
