TD launches trial on new auxiliary device to enhance pedestrian safety at road crossings (with photo)

The Transport Department (TD) today (July 5) said that the department has launched a six-month trial to enhance pedestrian safety by installing a new auxiliary device at road crossings to remind pedestrians not to cross the road when the "red man" symbol is lit, so as to enhance their awareness of road safety.

The auxiliary device projects a red light onto the waiting area of footpaths when the "red man" symbol is lit. The red light reflected from the ground or mobile device can serve to remind pedestrians, especially those looking at their mobile phones, that they should not cross the road when the "red man" symbol is lit.

The auxiliary devices are being installed at the following four junctions in July:

Further details of the auxiliary device are available on the TD's website (www.td.gov.hk). Upon completion of the trial, the TD will review the effectiveness of the device and consider the way forward.

The TD reminds pedestrians to observe road safety. They should be attentive and heed road conditions when crossing roads, and obey traffic regulations.
