The Automatic Toll Collection System for road tunnels was first introduced in Hong Kong in 1993. The system was then extended to all tolled tunnels and Control Areas. In April 2023, there are more than 349 000 electronic toll tags issued by the service provider of Automatic Toll Collection System, and about half of the vehicles passing through the tolled tunnels or tolled roads use the system.
