Introduction
The Government provides parking spaces at roadside to meet the short-term parking needs of motorists. In order to provide real-time information to facilitate the motorists for finding vacant parking spaces, the Transport Department is planning to install Internet-of-things sensors at about 250 non-metered on-street parking spaces to detect whether the parking spaces are occupied or not, so as to reduce the time for vehicles in wandering on the road and finding vacant parking spaces. The Transport Department will review the effectiveness of the trial scheme after its completion, and then consider installing sensors in other suitable non-metered on-street parking spaces.
Implementation Arrangement
The installation of sensors is planned to commence in phases from the second quarter of 2021. All installation works are targeted to be completed by 2022. Upon completion of the system testing, the relevant real-time information will be disseminated to motorists through the mobile / web version of“HKeMobility”and the website of“DATA.GOV.HK”, to assist motorists in finding vacant non-metered parking spaces.
The sensor will be installed in suitable position in the parking spaces and details shall refer to the figure below. The sensors will make use of the technology of radar and geomagnetic induction to detect whether the parking spaces have been occupied. For the purpose of protection of privacy, the sensors will not collect any personal information, vehicle model or vehicle registration number. The installation works will mainly involve road excavation as well as installation and testing of the sensors within the non-metered on-street parking spaces. Temporary traffic arrangement will also be implemented during the works period. It is expected that impact to the public is minimal.
