Vehicle examination fees for licence renewal of specified vehicles to be waived once

The Road Traffic Ordinance (Amendment of Schedule 3) (Fee Concessions) Order 2022 was issued with gazette. The Order implements the waiver of vehicle examination fees for renewal of vehicle licences of taxis, light buses, franchised and non-franchised buses, goods vehicles, trailers (other than trailers towed by private cars), special purpose vehicles and private cars with valid hire car permit (hereafter collectively referred to as "specified vehicles").

The vehicle examination fees payable during the periods from 30 December 2021 to 29 December 2022, and from 30 December 2022 to 29 December 2023 for the first vehicle examination in respect of each specified vehicle to be carried out under section 78(1)(d) of the Road Traffic Ordinance (i.e. for renewal of vehicle licence) where such examination is carried out at a Government Vehicle Examination Centre (VEC) (including the Transport Department Vehicle Examination Complex, Sheung Kwai Chung VEC and New Lantau Bus (1973) Co. Ltd. depot in Mui Wo) within the examination periods from 30 December 2021 to 28 April 2023, and from 30 December 2022 to 28 April 2024 will be waived once.

The vehicle examination fee will be automatically waived when the appointment is made, and vehicle owners do not need to apply separately.

For the case of light goods vehicles with permitted gross vehicle weight not exceeding 1.9 tonnes (which are currently examined at Designated Car Testing Centres (DCTC)), the vehicle owners can enjoy the proposed waiver when presenting the vehicles for examination at a VEC for the first time within the examination periods from from 30 December 2021 to 28 April 2023, and from 30 December 2022 to 28 April 2024 with booking made within the periods from from 30 December 2021 to 29 December 2022, and from 30 December 2022 to 29 December 2023. If the vehicle owners choose to continue to have their vehicles examined at a DCTC, the fee payable to the private operator of DCTC will not be waived.

Owners of specified vehicles may contact the Transport Department Hotline at 2804 2600 for details of the waiver.
