Registration and Licensing of Vehicles and Drivers

This Section provides statistics on the number of vehicles registered and licensed in Hong Kong, drivers and learner drivers, driving tests as well as taxi licence tenders.

As at 31 December 2008, the number of registered vehicles was 654,943 representing an increase by about 1.86% compared to that of 2007 and a growth of 9.4% over the 10 years' period since 1999. The number of licensed vehicles reached 590,382 by the end of 2008, representing an increase of 1.53% in comparison with 2007.

As regards driving licences, there were about 1,757,000 full driving licence holders at 31 December 2008, representing a decrease of 2.33% and a growth of 33.92% compared to the numbers in 2007 and 1999 respectively.

In view of the increasing demand for licensing services by the public, measures have been introduced to enable the public to apply for licensing services through various channels with an aim to save their time. Apart from using the counter services at the licensing offices in person, most of the licensing services could be obtained by post, using the drop-in box at the licensing offices or designated post offices in various districts, or by sending an agent. Besides, applications for renewal of vehicle and driving licences and notification of address change can be made online through GovHK.
