Section 4 - Road Tunnels and Toll Road

Road Tunnels and Toll Road

There are three tunnels in the new infrastructure Tsing Sha Control Area, which commissioned in March 2008. They are the Eagle's Nest Tunnel, Sha Tin Heights Tunnel and Tai Wai Tunnel. Together with these new tunnels, there are fifteen road tunnels in Hong Kong. They play an important role in the internal movements of people and goods.

The Government owns ten tunnels, namely the Lion Rock Tunnel, Aberdeen Tunnel, Kai Tak Tunnel, Shing Mun Tunnels, Tseung Kwan O Tunnel, Cheung Tsing Tunnel, Cross-Harbour Tunnel, Eagle's Nest Tunnel, Sha Tin Heights Tunnel and Tai Wai Tunnel. These ten government tunnels are managed and operated by private companies under management contracts awarded by the Transport Department.

Four other tunnels, namely the Eastern Harbour Crossing, Western Harbour Crossing, Tate's Cairn Tunnel and Tai Lam Tunnel, were built by private sector under "build, operate and transfer" franchises and are operated by private companies.

The Discovery Bay Tunnel was built and is operated by a private company.

The Lantau Link is the only toll road in Hong Kong, comprising the Tsing Ma Bridge, Ma Wan Viaduct and the Kap Shui Mun Bridge. This toll road is a strategic link between the Chek Lap Kok Airport and the rest of Hong Kong.
